From Wheelchair-Bound to Dancing Queen - McKenzie Brewster Heals Dysautonomia
In this episode of The Mind Change Podcast, Heather sits down with McKenzie Brewster to explore her journey with Dysautonomia.
McKenzie's struggle began in elementary school, with recurring sore throats and ear infections, but it wasn't until she was 17 that her health took a severe downturn. Chronic autonomic instability left her weak, dizzy, and unable to walk, and despite multiple specialists, a clear diagnosis remained elusive.
With determination and the support of loved ones, McKenzie pursued healing through traditional and alternative approaches. She witnessed a friend's remarkable recovery from a similar chronic illness, which inspired her to believe in the possibility of her own transformation.
Through physical therapy and naturopathic practices, McKenzie sought to connect her mind and body. As her journey continued, she discovered the power of positive thinking and its influence on healing.
However, McKenzie faced challenges in reconciling her identity with chronic illness and striving for a return to her former state. The idea of becoming well seemed elusive, leading her to question whether her chronic illness was her fault or a punishment.
Moving to Oregon offered a fresh start, where McKenzie sought support from bodyworkers and explored the mind-body connection. She eventually reached out to Heather for mind change work, initially skeptical but open to the possibility.
During their sessions, Heather helped McKenzie challenge deep-seated belief systems and reframe patterns of struggle. They explored the concept of secondary gains—subconscious coping mechanisms tied to relationships and connections with others.
For McKenzie, wellness now means embracing her inherent goodness and vitality, finding harmony and alignment within herself. She is now a Mind Change practitioner, sharing her story to empower others on their healing journeys.
Both Heather and McKenzie discuss the deeply personal nature of mind change work, where belief systems and subconscious patterns vary between individuals. They don't actively seek clients but trust that when people feel ready and safe, they will naturally find the mind change work that aligns with them. Embracing individuality is central to their approach, recognizing that wellness differs for everyone, and encouraging each person to discover what best supports their healing and well-being.
