Healing can help everyone
I speak about this concept more deeply in my book, Mind Change. Here is an excerpt
“...trauma is subjective. Even though we all possess the same basic “warning and response system," the way we in-put the experience, as well as our unique model of the world, will be big factors in how this experience is filed. Also, our individual perceptions of trauma are different. A child could be yelled at by a teacher in school, and depending on this child’s previous experiences, this could be devastating or largely ignored. Even children raised in the same home can have vastly different reactions to the same experiences.
It is my opinion that most of us hold some form of trauma. We all have some experience in our life that continues to haunt us. Granted, someone who felt like they were a bit ignored as a child may not have the same outward effects that a survivor of incest may exhibit, but the hurt is there nonetheless. Our society is good at comparing. And we often gauge our suffering by the suffering of others.
“Well, at least I didn’t have it that bad.”
“Yeah, my father wasn’t around much, but at least he didn’t beat me.”
“I was bullied terribly in school...but wasn’t everyone?”
“My mother was an alcoholic, but not as bad as other people I know.”
At first glance, these statements seem like the better of two options. You know the other one, the “woe is me...I had it worse than anyone” type of person. The trouble is, both of these people are hurting. They both have had hurtful, negative experiences, but the latter type tends to get the worse reputation. Of course, we can see why. Most of us are just trying to keep all those negative memories, thoughts, and emotions at bay on a daily basis.”
We are all hurting. Comparing trauma is a waste of valuable energy. It is time to HEAL!
